Since its inception in 1945, the United Nations undertook the duty of combating human rights abuses. To achieve this noble objective, the UN had to set up several conventions and treaties, commonly known as the UN Conventions on Human Rights.
The UN Conventions on Human Rights include the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; the Optional Protocol to the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; the Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights; the Convention Against Torture; Convention Against Genocide; the Geneva Conventions; the Convention on the Rights of the Child; the Convention on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women; and the Charter of the United Nations.
The UN Conventions on Human Rights aim to protect the inalienable rights of human beings, such as the right to life; to liberty and freedom of movement; to equality before the law; to a freedom of opinion, thought, conscience, religion, assembly, etc. All these rights are constantly violated in many parts of the world, and the role of NGOs consists in denunciating these violations and in working to implement efficient monitoring techniques to prevent future abuses.
