The fight for the rights of the handicapped will always be topical as long as there are still abuses in the rights of persons with disabilities in several parts of the world.
This fight consists in promoting the disabled persons’ rights to a normal and decent life without any form of discrimination on the basis of race, colour, religion, sex, political opinions, or social origin. It promotes as well the right of persons with disabilities to live in dignity in their families and to take part in all social, recreational and creative activities.
NGOs encourage as well governments to take into consideration the rights of persons with disabilities when building infrastructure for public use (schools, hospitals, governmental offices, etc.). They also sensitize people to respect the disabled persons’ rights, notably in the access to education, to work, and to public transport.
The struggle of NGOs for the rights of persons with disabilities will be crowned in 2006. On the 13th of December of that year, the United Nations adopted the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. On March 30, 2007, 81 states and the European Union ratified the convention. It was the first human rights convention to be ratified so massively on its opening day.
