Coined in 2000, the Millennium Development Goals are eight goals intended to improve life for populations living on less than a dollar a day. 189 UN state members, along with international institutions, have agreed to adopt these goals and to try to achieve them by the year 2015. These eight goals are: eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary education, promoting gender equality and empowering women, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability, and developing a global partnership for development.

To achieve the Millennium Development Goals, governments need the assistance of NGOs. In the last decade, the importance of NGOs grew significantly, notably after the success of the Ottawa Treaty. The International Conference on the role of NGOs in Global Governance will discuss the repercussions of this growing influence on governmental decisions. With the presence of Mr Brahimi Lakhdar, the UN former Special Adviser to the Secretary-General, and several other internationally-renowned figures, the conference will try to provide insights on the future of NGOs and on the developments in their role.
