In 2000, 189 UN member states and international institutions agreed on the Millennium Development Goals, which are a list of eight goals to achieve by the year 2015. These goals were devised to help the billion of people living on less than a dollar a day, and to provide them with education and adequate healthcare (combating diseases, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, etc.). Millennium Development Goals stress also the importance of agricultural and environmental sustainability, and call for a gender equality.
The International Conference on the Role of NGOs in Global Governance will try to discuss the role of NGOs in the elaboration of the Millennium Development Goals, as well as its role in the establishment of treaties and conventions under the auspices of the UN. The Conference will be attended by many internationally-renowned politicians, economists and activists in the humanitarian field, among whom Mr Brahimi Lakhdar, the UN former Special Adviser to the Secretary-General; Pascal Boniface, Director of the Institute for International and Strategic Relations; and Henri Rouillé d’Orfeuil, Chairman of “Coordination SUD”.
