Today, the constant increase in the number of international development NGOs, together with the growing importance of their actions, is concerning more and more experts of NGOs. The main question is: to what extent can international development NGOs influence on governments’ decisions.

Operating all over the world, international development NGOs are mostly involved in activities related to HIV/Aids, poverty eradication, and war victims (notably the victims of anti-personnel mines). These NGOs try also to promote democracy and the respect of human rights in colleges, schools and amid the youth populations.

Handicap International is hosting the International Conference on the Role of NGOs in Global Governance on the 12th and 13th of February. The conference will be attended by important figures of the humanitarian and political fields, among whom Mr Brahimi Lakhdar, the UN former Special Adviser to the Secretary-General, and Mr Pascal Boniface, Director of the Institute for International and Strategic Relations. The debate will focus essentially on the role of international development NGOs in global governance, as well as their influence on governments’ decisions.
