The question of governments and NGOs partnership is still a matter of bitter debates among pro-partnership and those who deprecate such partnership as utopian and unrealistic. In fact, the successes of NGOs in the resolution of some human rights-related issues drew the attention of public opinion to the positive role that these NGOs can play if they have access to all means and tools. Moreover, the sometimes dangerous do-nothing policies of many governments (such as the positions of many governments vis-à-vis cluster bombs) alerted public opinion on the importance of the role of NGOs.
Handicap International is holding an International Conference on the Role of NGOs in Global Governance with the presence of internationally-renowned personalities. The conference will try to tackle the issue of governments-NGOs partnership. Participants will also discuss the following questions:
- To what extent can NGOs have influence on governments’ decision-making processes?
- Can we consider the actions of NGOs as a natural consequence to the inaction of governments?
