Of all the controversial subjects in international relations, the concept of globalization is probably the one which provoked the largest number of violent reactions around the world, committed notably by movements that describe themselves as alter-globalists. Today, the relationship between the advocators of globalization and NGOs is much more like a fight between NGOs and governments, since a large number of NGOs decry several facets of globalization and preach for another form of globalization that rejects neo-liberalism and imperialism.
The international conference to be held in Lyon on the 12th and 13th of February will discuss the role on NGOs in international governance and their position with regard to some complicated issues: VIH and AIDS, poverty eradication, access to medicines and to education for all the people, the Millennium Development Goals, and the position of NGOs concerning globalization. With the presence of Mr Brahimi Lakhdar, former Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General; Pascal Boniface, Director of the Institute for International and Strategic Relations; and Henri Rouillé d’Orfeuil, Chairman of “Coordination SUD”, the debate promises to be enriching and constructive.
