The activities of NGOs and the widening of their scope of intervention raise several questions regarding the future of global governance:
- Can NGOs have any real influence on governments’ decisions?
- To what extent can campaigns by NGOs influence the emergence of new rights and rules in international law?
- Is the advocacy of NGOs work a natural reaction to the do-nothingism of governments vis-à-vis some convoluted issues?
- Is a mandate for negotiation for NGOs a threat to their ability to denounce injustice?
All these questions will be debated in the International Conference on the Role of NGOs in Global Governance. Hosted by Handicap International on the 12th and 13th of February 2008, the conference will be attended by Lakhdar Brahimi, Pascal Boniface, Henri Rouillé d’Orfeuil, and several other esteemed personalities, who are going to present their points of view regarding the evolution of NGOs and their influence on future global governance.
