The spectacular successes of NGOs led to the emergence of voices calling for a wider role for NGOs in international development and cooperation. The Ottawa Treaty for instance drew much attention to the results that might be brought by the efforts of NGOs. Today, the option of collaborative governance is presented by many analysts as the only means to ensure a better application of international law and a wider respect for human rights.

The International Conference on the Role of NGOs in Global Governance will tackle the issue of NGOs and democratic global governance, and will discuss as well the alternative of collaborative governance and the feasibility of its implementation. With the presence of Mr Lakhdar Brahimi, former Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General, and several other highly-esteemed experts in the political and humanitarian issues, the debate promises to be insightful and thought-provoking.
