Much of the debate around the nature and value of aid provided to developing countries concerns the limits of developed countries’ generosity, as well as the efficiency of this aid in the developing of local economies.

Facts and statistics tend to give us a gloomy interpretation of the efficiency of aid provided to developed countries. As a matter of fact, African countries who were receiving aid in the 1970s are still aid-dependant. Worst of all, they are today poorer than what they have been in the seventies, in terms of GDP per capita (World Bank Statistics). Asian countries, which received much less aid than their African counterparts, relied on sound economic plans and wise decision-making to lift them out of poverty. The results speak for themselves.

The issue of the international aid to developing countries is one of the issues to be discussed in the International Conference on the Role of NGOs in Global Governance. Several internationally-renowned politicians, economists and actors in the humanitarian field will debate on the growing influence of NGOs and their role in international cooperation and development.
